New Site - Board Letter to Sangha

Site Search & Building Oversight

November 16, 2002

Dear Deep Spring Sangha,

As you know, the Site Search Action Plan was approved by the DSC Board on Monday, October 28. The Site Search Committee was composed of Dave Coupland, Susan Weir, Barbara and me.

We located a site (at 3003 Washtenaw, suite#2) which met all the criteria in the plan except the financial criteria. The rental of the 1000 sq.ft. was $1000/mo but when we included utilities and insurance the cost was closer to $1200/mo. The site does have an "extra" smaller room with potential for rental to bodyworkers, counselors or small groups. The committee felt that this potential for additional income justified the increased cost.

In a special Board meeting on Saturday, November 16, the Site Search Committee presented a recommendation to the Board that DSC proceed with renting the property. The Board was in agreement and reached a consensus decision to proceed with making that commitment.

One of the tasks outlined in the Action Plan was that of creating a Building Oversight Committee to be responsible for the initial setup of the space and the ongoing maintenance and coordination of building activities. This committee will report directly to the Board. The Board has appointed Lou Weir as coordinator of this committee. Su Hansen (the Office Manager), Dottie Coyne and John Gutoskey have agreed to join Lou on the committee. More members may be needed so if you have a particular interest please let Lou know.

Lou is working with me in the final lease negotiations. The tentative move-in date is December 15. This date was chosen because we thought it allowed enough time for setup that we can be fully functioning in time for January classes.

I remind myself that I am not looking at the end of a major task but looking at the beginning of a new phase in our life as a spiritual community. I have confidence in the skill and love that is present in all of you. I think the discussion subject for the Dec 8 Sangha meeting (Bringing our practice into our community interactions) is very timely. I hope to see you there.

in metta,
Ann Barden
President, DSC Board
